Holland manager Dick Advocaat has given his backing to Virgil van Dijk as he looks to secure a move from Southampton before the summer transfer window closes.
The Netherlands international centre back has been training away from the first team, has played no part in pre-season matches and has told manager Mauricio Pellegrino he wants to leave.
Speaking to Voetbalzone magazine about Van Dijk’s attempts to secure a move, Advocaat said: ”You can condemn it, but come on, if you can earn five times as much at a top English club, then I understand you’re going to take action.”
The Dutch defender wants to quit St Mary’s this summer, with a move to Liverpool his preferred destination.
However, the Saints are refusing to sanction Van Dijk’s switch away, insisting he will spend the season at Southampton.
